Short Biography

Luigi Malagò is Principal Investigator at the Transylvanian Institute of Neuroscience (TINS), Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Previously, he was Project Director at the Romanian Institute of Science and Technology (RIST), Cluj-Napoca, Romania (2016-2021), where he led the DeepRiemann ''Riemannian Optimization Methods for Deep Learning'' Project, in the framework of POC 2014-2020 - ANCSI Competitiveness Operational Programme. Prior to moving to Romania, he was Assistant Professor at Shinshu University in Nagano, Japan (2014-16); Research Assistant at Collegio Carlo Alberto, Moncalieri, Italy (05-06/2014 and 06-07/2016), working with Giovanni Pistone; and a Postdoc Researcher at Universita' degli Studi di Milano, Italy (2012-14), working with Nicolo' Cesa-Bianchi. He obtained a Bachelor (2004) and a Master cum Laude in Computer Science Engineering at Politecnico di Milano (2007, double degree from Politecnico di Torino), and the Diploma of Alta Scuola Politecnica (2006). In 2012 he received a PhD in Information Technology at Politecnico di Milano, under the supervision of Matteo Matteucci and Giovanni Pistone. His work has been awarded with the Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation Award for the best PhD thesis (2012). During his career, he had the opportunity to visit different laboratories, such as Nihat Ay's group at MPI for Mathematics in the Sciences (MIS) in Leipzig, Germany (04-07/2010); Shun-ichi AMARI's lab, at RIKEN Brain Science Institute (07-08/2010), Tokyo, Japan; and Inria Saclay, TAO team (10/2014-09/2015), Orsay Cedex, France. His research interests mainly focus on Information Geometry, with applications to Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Stochastic Optimization, in particular on first and second-order optimization methods over statistical manifold.
